SEA GIRT — The Sea Girt Elementary School’s annual Spring Art Show was held last Thursday, May 15 showcasing student art work of all grade levels to family, friends and faculty.

This year’s theme “Among the Stars” featured over 100 original works of art by students in Pre-K through eighth grade, centered around all-things outer space from planets, to constellations and aliens, presented in a multitude of mediums including clay sculptures, air dry clay, plaster sculptures, acrylic paintings, temper paint and print making.

“We had a really great turnout,” said Art/Media Teacher Maureen MacIntosh, “partially, and thanks to our spring concert that runs before that so a lot of our families are involved in that, and then it kind of segways into the entrance of our art show.”

The art show led guests on a walk-through of the school hallways adorned with original art pieces, props and crafts such as a water tattoo station and space scratch art that engaged the guests in an interactive way.

“Usually I have some sort of idea (for theme) coming off of the summer,” said MacIntosh, “that I think would be fun and exciting. I try to base most of my themes on what will get the kids excited to make art.”

Making its return again this year, she said, was the glow-in-the room that was first introduced during the 1980s neon-themed show a couple of years ago. MacIntosh thought that this year’s theme of outer space would be a great way to bring back and repurpose this space that the students enjoyed so much.

The glow-in-the-dark featured art made with two-dimensional specific neon-florescent paintings, in addition to floating UFO sculptures.
